Connect the Dottes

Connects the Dottes is an association of community leaders connecting groups across the county who are interested in Substance Abuse Prevention. The “Dottes” are working on issues such as:

Working together for effective substance abuse prevention
for Wyandotte County
• Underage Drinking- helping to reduce the sale of alcohol to minors, increasing the age at which minors begin drinking, and decreasing the amount of binge drinking.
• Rush Center Training for the faith community* - On October 9, 2008, 23 ministers and lay leaders representing 11 churches in Wyandotte County attended the first of two trainings on the faith community's response to the issue of substance abuse prevention. The second training is scheduled for January 23 & 24, 2009, and will be for teams of church members.
• Al's Pals Training for pre-school teachers - the Coalition sponsored its 4th two-day training for pre-school teachers in Wyandotte County. Teachers representing the Turner School District, EOF Headstart and Uncle Sam's Academy attended the training and will begin using the SAMHSA approved curriculum this fall (2008). This session completed training for every headstart teacher. Initial training was held in 2005 and has been held every year since.
• Drug Endangered Children - Children living in houses where drugs are being used or manufactured face different dangers than "children in need of care" (CINC). These dangers and a design for treatment is being outlined in a DEC protocol.
• Tobacco License for Wyandotte County - Currently tobacco retailers pay $25 to the state for a two-year license. With the additional dollars a local tobacco license would generate, we hope to hire at least a part-time person to do compliance checks on the retailers, making certain they are not selling to youth under the age of 18.
• Grassroots Leadership Training - On-going monthly workshops that teach strategies designed to empower neighborhood residents to resolve problems and to promote a safe, clean and caring environment.

*The mission of the Rush Center of the Johnson Institute is: to engage and assist people of faith in the development of caring
communities that promote prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) abuse and where recovery from addiction is valued
and supported
